Summer '21 Round-Up

Image
DISCLAIMER: I started writing this as my June round-up and then commenced the busiest, most chaotic summer of my life and I never got round to finishing it (ironic considering what I wrote in the intro). Here instead is my summer '21 round up! Firstly, apologies for my long absence. I started this blog back around Christmas as I was bored to tears in lockdown and felt like I needed something to focus my energies on. Unfortunately, I forgot that university is all-consuming and once I started term again I didn't have much time to write. Now I've finished first year and have a good few months off for summer, I'm hoping to start up writing again - of course with the aim to share great music and my favourite upcoming artists, but also to get in some practice for the music journalism module I'm taking next year! The last year has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging and disheartening periods for musicians in my living memory. The uncertainty of a precarious summer...

February Round-Up

Image
Although we still have a way to go, February has shone a ray of hope on the music industry as live events become a prospect of the not-so-distant future. February has also been a great month for Liverpool music with some brilliant new tracks coming out. Here's my round-up of my favourite singles from the last month - a list that consists of all female artists and just happens to have been published on International Women's Day! Not intentional, but a happy coincidence!  This Too Shall Pass - Niki Kand Sleek and cool, Niki Kand is a queen of dream-pop. Her latest single appropriately landed just in time for the first spell of summery weather in the UK, and listening to this track with the birds singing and the sun shining through my window just filled me with springtime joy. With chilled lo-fi production and silky vocals, Niki tempts you to relax and just slow down - something I think we all need to be reminded of right now. A Sun Going Down - Natalie McCool When watching Natal...

Scouse Singles 2020

Image
It's been a tumultuous year for the music industry and the loss of landmark Liverpool venues like The Zanzibar and Sound Basement, and potentially Parr Street Studios and Studio 2, has struck a serious blow to Liverpool's cultural identity. And yet, in spite of all this, Liverpool continues to nurture world class artists and produce world class music. The city may have suffered some losses, but not enough to dampen the passion of its artists. I for one cannot wait to be back in a dark, sweaty room with a vodka and coke in hand, losing my voice and feeling the kind of adrenaline that only accompanies live music. Until then, here's my round up of the best singles that Liverpool had to offer in 2020. 10. Wasn't Made For Love - James Jackson James Jackson is an incredibly talented writer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer. 'Wasn't Made For Love' is beautifully written and performed, and the soundscape that James creates is so encapsulating and atmosph...

How to Support Your Favourite Artists

It's now more important than ever to be supporting your favourite artists in any way you can - big or small. With the live music industry currently immobilised, the majority of artists are missing out on their primary source of income as well as having their ability to reach new audiences limited. Here are some easy ways you can support your favourite artists for all budgets. 1. Interact Make sure to follow your favourite artists on social media and interact with their posts. The nature of algorithms means that more engagement on a post will boost it in the timelines of other users, resulting in increased reach and therefore further increased engagement. The Instagram algorithm values shares and saves over likes and comments, so save and share artist's posts to your story to help boost their Instagram presence. This is the easiest possible way to show your support and is, of course, completely free. 2. Shout Another free and incredibly easy option is to share independent music ...
